In the last year and a half the Dropping Gems label has grown in size and evolved in scope, and nothing helps to illustrate this more than our most hallowed institution: the crew showcase. As in the past, we’re taking over a venue and filling the night top-to-bottom with DG performers, presenting a bird’s eye view of one of the most exciting electronic music collectives to come out of the Northwest (so far) this decade. Naturally this showcase is our biggest yet, featuring 9 acts sharing the stage at Portland’s legendary Holocene. Expect fresh new sets from Bone Rock, DJAO, Citymouth, Ghost Feet, Brownbear, Natasha Kmeto, The Great Mundane, Timeboy, and Rap Class, as well as the special return of Gumar and his Magical Midi Band. If you’ve been to a DG showcase before, you can expect the same thing you saw last time, which is, as you probably already know, something completely-utterly-satisfyingly-&-reassuringly new. More information and RSVP here.

The Ache is the first in-house release from our newest crew member Natasha Kmeto, showcasing a bold and frankly amazing new direction for the accomplished artist. After several years of creating progressively more advanced music, Natasha has arrived to deliver what is easily her best work to date, an ambitious foray into beats, bass, exotic samples, analog synths, and immaculately crafted textures, with her voice covering the entire affair like hot butter. The feel is hardly cluttered, though, and could possibly be our cleanest and most R’n’B inflected release to date, a shining example of what she’s got us calling “futuristic soul.” In contrast to some of our other material, The Ache is a lot like something you might hear on the radio, except about a dozen steps ahead, exactly where the music on the radio should be.

The Ache is available for digital download on iTunes in addition to Bandcamp, where you can also find limited edition CD’s.

“She literally stopped me in my tracks when I heard this” – Mary Anne Hobbs

Download ‘Detox Saturday’ on XLR8R.

5. Ouzo Fade
8. Detox Saturday

Dropping Gems is proud to present Gem Drops Two, the second installment of our compilation series Gem Drops. This time we’ve assembled exclusive material from a whole new set of prominent forward-thinking producers and once again paired them with brand new material from our collective’s members. The results speak for themselves: an electric melange of uptempo and downtempo jams, hazy dream melodies, and space station future-flights. As with our last compilation, our basic mission here has been to cull together the “best of” from the diverse range of styles, scenes, head-spaces and localities that catch our ear. We’re happy to call that mission a success, one that we hope to share with fans of the first Gem Drops and newcomers alike. We’re also happy to announce that all of the money raised by Gem Drops Two will be donated to our friends at the American Cancer Society to support cancer research, in the same manner as the first Gem Drops compilation. Listen, download, donate, and join us for another peek over the horizon.

The album is available as a ”name your price/donation” download on our Bandcamp page. We also have a limited run of pro dubbed cassettes with artwork available for those who donate $15 or more.
